We were messing around with FaceTime and tried it through a HTC Hero’s wifi hotspot. When we disconnected the wifi the connection and the FaceTime chat remained flawless. We found out that the Iphone 4′s connected with eachother through their own ad-hoc network. It works when initiated through the same wifi connection.

@Ownifier Fair … @Ownifier Fair enough. I wonder if it’s forcing it through 3G after the hotspot is terminated then. Have you checked out your data usage after trying this experiment?
@Whiteboyradioman … @Whiteboyradioman Nice assumption but no we have never connected to any networks in this area before and iphones don’t automatically join new networks. But that would be sweet if you could replicate the video results by switching networks like that.
I’m not sure that’s … I’m not sure that’s what happened. (ad hoc network between two iPhones). I think once you terminated your HTC tethered hotspot, your iPhones hopped onto the next available wi-fi signal it could access.
My phone does this all the time. When I shut down my network before leaving each morning, my phone joins my neighbors unsecured network. I’m usually listening to internet radio at the time and it never misses a beat.
I think that may be what’s happening here. But hey! I could be wrong.
@MrJeain Sorry I’m … @MrJeain Sorry I’m not tech support. But you should just be able to answer facetime calls just fine no matter what mobile network you are on, as long as you are on wifi.
If the 3G is off … If the 3G is off when you turn on your phone, will you be able to Connect FaceTime?
Because I can’t, I need to turn on 3G first since last shut down, then I can turn off 3G and FaceTime still work. If I don’t turn on 3G when I turn on my phone, it won’t work saying “Connecting” all time.
guys let me you … guys let me you facetime is not as impressive as you think. when camera phones were first made in the early 2000′s Nokia had video call back when there wasn’t 3g and YOU WERE NOT RESTRICTED to WIFi, you were able talk and see each other using cellular satellites. So you see facetime is just ichat portable, what if there is an emergency and there is no wifi and you need facetime what will you do, Tether?

@cemsengul16 right, …
