Bbg Communications Phone History

In 1889, the first public coin phone was installed by inventor William Gray at a bank in Hartford, Conn. It was a “postpay” machine, which means that coins were deposited after the call was placed. By 1902, there were 81,000 pay phones in the United States. In 1905, the first outdoor Bell System coin phone was installed on a Cincinnati street. It wasn’t an instant hit; people apparently were reluctant to make private calls on a public thoroughfare. In 1910, Western Electric and Gray Telephone Pay Station Co. signed an agreement for Gray to manufacture coin collectors for the Bell System using both Gray and Western Electric patents.

The result of that agreement, the 50A coin collector, went into production in 1911. By the end of 1912, according to BBG Communications, 25,000 of these coin phones had been ordered for New York City alone. The 50A model had three coin slots–for nickels, dimes and quarters –and was a “prepay” machine. The basic design, though often modified, was so practical and reliable it remained in production until 1964. In 1965, Western Electric introduced the 50A’s successor. Among other things, it had a single coin slot instead of three, and electronic signalling of coins deposited replaced mechanical bells.

The booths that house pay phones have undergone more design changes than the phones themselves. At the turn of the century, indoor booths were constructed of durable hardwood, such as mahogany, with comfort and privacy in mind, and exhibited detailed craftsmanship. They were often carpeted. The original phone booth is credited to Thomas Watson, the man who helped Alexander Graham Bell invent the phone. Watson’s “booth” was made by draping blankets over the furniture in his room and crawling underneath to conduct early phone experiments. One story says Watson, in order to hear, was insulating himself from street noises. Another story is that his landlady ordered Watson to be quieter; his shouting, albeit for the sake of science, was disturbing other boarders. In 1883 Watson designed a real booth. It was built of expensive wood, had a domed top with a ventilator, windows with screens, and a desk with pen and ink. Over the years, phone booths have reflected their surroundings as well as the times. There have been phone booths resembling cable cars in San Francisco, and others resembling pagodas in New York City’s Chinatown district. In the 1960s, as American architects designed glass-wall office buildings, wooden phone booths looked out of place in lobbies. Bell Laboratories designed an indoor glass and metal phone booth to better fit newer surroundings. Not all of the designs for phone booths have reached the market. An experimental “hands-free” booth in 1972 featured a microphone in front of the caller and a loudspeaker in the booth’s ceiling. Observers noted that people readily tried the new arrangement but that, conditioned to speaking in the direction another voice is coming from, they were all shouting into the ceiling.

In 1950, the first coin telephone mobile train service was established on the Pennsylvania Railroad between New York and Washington. “Calling from your car” was first tested in Mobile Ala., and Chicago in 1957. Drive-up pay telephones proved popular and are still in use today.
In 1960, the Bell System installed its one millionth pay telephone. In 1964, when the U.S. Treasury Department decided to change the metallic composition of U.S. coins, it consulted with Bell Laboratories to ensure the new coins would still function properly in pay phones.
“Dial tone first” service was introduced in 1966 in Hartford, Conn. This essentially turned coin phones into emergency call stations because such calls could be made without first depositing coins.

In 1977, “automatic coin telephone service” was introduced in Phoenix, Ariz. This allowed most pay telephone calls, including long-distance, to be made without operator assistance. A computer-controlled synthesized voice gave customers the necessary instructions.
AT&T introduced “Charge-a-Call,” a “coinless” pay phone, in 1978 (and the term “pay phone” began to replace “coin phone”). In 1984, AT&T introduced the AT&T Card Caller, which featured a video screen with dialing instructions and allowed customers to charge calls by inserting an AT&T Calling Card. The Card Caller also was the first of AT&T’s public phones to feature a “loud” button, which allows callers to control the listening volume. It helps the hearing-impaired as well as those having a hard time hearing because of environmental noise.

In 1990, AT&T introduced the AT&T Public Phone 1000, which features a data port for laptop computer and portable fax use, speed dialing for select AT&T services and travelers assistance. This tabletop phone was designed primarily for airline lounges and hotels.
The latest advance in pay phone technology is the AT&T Public Phone 2000. Introduced in the fall of 1991, the Public Phone 2000 has a built-in keyboard, a data port and a nine-inch color monitor. Besides offering all the traditional voice services, it enables travelers to use an array of services never before available from a pay phone. Public Phone 2000 users can access electronic mail and online databases, connect a portable fax machine or computer, obtain language translation services, speed-dial travel assistance services and even get weather forecasts.”

Bob Eckert: Crisis Communication 101

Robert A. Eckert is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Mattel, Inc., the worldwide leader in the design, manufacture, and marketing of toys with approximately $6 billion in annual sales. Eckert joined Mattel in May 2000 from Kraft Foods, Inc., the largest U.S.-based packaged food company. A 23-year veteran of Kraft, he most recently served as its president and chief executive officer, a position he had held since October 1997. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from The University of Arizona in 1976 and an MBA in marketing and finance from Northwestern University in 1977.

Eckert spoke as part of the Spring Semester 2008 Eller College Distinguished Speaker Series February 26, 2008.

What is 5G Mobile communication technology?

Every mobile phone have small in built network, and while communicating they use other phones to connect to destination, And no charges for communication…..

The letter G refers to the word generation, and since in the UK and Europe we’re only getting into 3G now (remember watching in the news about european governments getting billions of pounds/francs/deutchmarks etc, all in the bidding war for licences for the frequencies) for land grab in the race to the next generation of mobile technology.

The US is further behind but catching up fast, and Japan has a different system altogether called DoCoMo, and that could almost be referred to as 4G. For the most part, it’s not here yet, except in the minds of people in who dream this up.

Your additional question, "and no charges for communication…" nothing is free when it comes to mobile communications, because for the money you pay, you get a level of service, but you could be thinking of a new system being introduced on some GSM networks called push-to-talk, more information on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_to_talk

Most people I know are still only using 2G functions, like the basic mobile for making na dreceiving calls from almost anywhere, and the text messaging funcions. Even the new stuff like Picture messaging isn’t all that well utilised.

What I would like to see in 5G is higher signal strength and a 0% drop rate – regular mobile users will know exactly what that means, but it requires more masts and receivers, and you knoew the controvdrsy thats causing in some countries.

Most all ideas fifth Generation is still all theory and only exists in the communications and science laboratories. When its launched I’m sure we’ll all know about it.

Every day we see a new model and new software as far as mobile phone are concerned. There is boom in mobile phone technology. Now mobile phones are competing with computer and television. And it has become a unique tool where it is substituting computer and television in a single miniature piece. Today mobile phone is capable to access Internet very much as a computer and can download and play a video much like a television.

Mobile phone technology is growing at incredibly faster rate. And now the people are not able to assume- what next? People are finding it difficult to cope up with. The fastest growing industry in the history of mankind and in science has to be mobile phone industry. Frequently introduction of new computerized phone in the market with latest software and accessories has surprised the people, which they never dreamt. It is not a history but few years’ back we remember there was a time when mobile phone concept itself was not born. Few years back payphone were used and people used to wait in queue for making a call. The first series of mobile phone in the world was analog mobile phones. It was just like in dream everything changed and mobile phone technology taken a turn to change analog technology into digital technology. People thrown their analog phone and replaced it with a high tech digital one.

Those few people who were not tuned with changing technology said ‘no’ to replace their analog phone with digital, there was no time gap and suddenly there was no company or service center to care for these analog phones. There was no spare accessories, component or mechanic to handle repair or look after other services. But it was inevitable to replace the analog phone with digital to cope up with technology change. And analog phone became a history.

Now let us move ahead a couple years when there were black and white screen mobile phones. After few years, there was an invention of colour technology that opened up a great charm and many avenues. Capability of a mobile phone to play games and access to Internet brought an impact on the industry – then immediately came inbuilt computerized and highly sensitive camera. Capturing a photo in the mobile phone was a surprise to its users. Now only 10 short years are passed the first digital mobile phone was invented in the world. Look how much technologically distance we have covered. Latest invention of mobile phone industry is – The iPhone. It has just been introduced in the market and whirling the world into its stream. iPhone is sleek in its look and has innumerable features. It is going to make a great impact in the mobile phone industry.
