New HP/Palm Phone – the Veer 4G

HP released their new WebOS device on May 15, 2011 – the Veer 4G

The Veer 4G is HP’s newest offering in the wireless space. It is a tiny thing, roughly 3 1/2 by 2 1/8 x 1/2 inches, weighing in at approximately 3.5 ounces, right around the size of a credit card. It incorporates a slide out QWERTY keypad, although the buttons are so small as to be practically unusable.

The Veer is a HSPA-class device – 4G!

At least according to AT&T’s marketing folks it is, anyway. The Veer has HSDPA and HSUPA speeds enabled natively right out of the box. Since most of AT&T’s network sites are enabled for this service, as soon as you boot the Veer, it will show H+ in the display, indicating the service is there. However, since enhanced-speed backhaul from the tower to the Internet backbone is necessary for true 4G service, and this is not yet available everywhere, you may not get true 4G service from the Veer just yet.

The Veer 4G runs WebOS 2.0

If you’ve used a Palm Pre or a Pixi in the past, the OS will seem instinctively familiar to you. The same slide-and-flick operation is available on the Veer as on the older devices. To me, it is an easy to use device, except for its diminutive size, although I wouldn’t want a Veer as my primary web device. The application market available for the WebOS devices is severely lacking, trailing far behind even BlackBerry AppWorld and Windows Phone Market, traditionally the back of the field as far as these things go. The Veer’s lack of expandable memory is also a dealbreaker for me.

Save Money and Stock Up on Discount Eyeglasses

Any business traveler knows that loosing your keys, wallet, and eyeglasses are a part of the life of a road warrior. It’s just the way it is, always running to the next meeting or standing for an hour at the car rental counter. Those little accessories get lost out there.

My personal problem is loosing glasses. I figure last year I dropped $1200 on replacement glasses. I only lost 2 pair, but I have to keep spares in the car and at home and another spare pair in my laptop case. You get the picture. It adds up.

Times are getting tight — even for this road warrior. So last weekend I Googled discount eyeglasses and found a cool review on the Examiner site by Eric something or other. It was about a company called Zenni Optical and the prices he quoted made me click over to their site.

Zenni Optical is amazing. They offer a huge line of high quality eyeglasses at a low low price. Their website is great to shop from. You can compare frame styles (they have a super selection of sharp looking frames) and you’ll have your glasses delivered in about two weeks. The shipping costs are minimal and if you buy several pair you’ll save on that too.

It’s a no brainer. Great styles, cut out the middleman, no trip to the vision center, and I calculated I would save $1000 if I have used them last year just for the glasses I need. Guess where I’m going this year?

A big bag of iPhone 4 fail.

iphone-sucks

The iPhone 4 fail…

I hear it often – the iPhone 4 is terrible, it does this, it doesn’t do this… It’s generally a statement on the part of users that isn’t well thought through. In the interest of full disclosure, I don’t like the iPhone. I don’t care for Apple products in general, although they do tend to be well engineered and do what they are advertised to do. Steve Jobs is a certifiable genius, no doubt. The man has taken Apple from a company being run out of Woz’s garage to the second largest company on the planet based on market capitalization. I think BlackBerry OS and Android phones are far better, just based on the open-source platform (Android) and the way they handle email (BB).

Honestly, I believe most of the perceived iPhone 4 fail is marketing. The iPhone is advertised as the go-anywhere, do-anything product of the millennia… And it really isn’t. People that have never had or used a PDA before buy the iPhone in huge numbers, yet they haven’t a clue how to operate it properly or fix whatever issues might crop up.

In my opinion, plenty of people that HAVE iPhones don’t really need them. These people set themselves up for iPhone 4 fail by giving in to their base need to conform. They need what is referred to in the wireless industry as a quick-messaging phone, like Verizon’s Pantech Jest, or AT&T’s LG Neon 2. These aren’t true smartphones; they don’t require a smartphone data package. The drawback to these phones is that there aren’t a lot of apps for these devices, although most of them come with Facebook preloaded, which is generally the first app that people download from Apple’s App Store. The data plans associated with these phones tend to be less expensive than the $25-30 data plans required for the more-powerful phones like the Motorola Droid line, the iPhone 4, the Blackberry line and so on. These quick-messaging phones are more of a hybrid between the older ‘flip’ phones that were popular just a few years ago, and the higher-end devices that are most prevalent today.
There will be a time – likely within the next couple of years – where the only thing available will be a virtual computer/phone/social device much like the iPhone 4 and Android phones are becoming today. People are going to have to get with the program and start learning how to use these things because eventually, these are going to be all that’s available. Preventing iPhone 4 fail is easy, if you work at it. iPhone 4 fail

Educate yourselves. Quit being stupid. The guys at the Genius Bar are tired of helping your sorry asses. The guys at the AT&T store ? I can assure you, once you have purchased a phone from them, once you walk out the door, unless you have a billing problem or need a new accessory, you are dead to them. Your precious Angry Birds app makes your iPhone 4 fail crash? Call Apple. Better hope you bought AppleCare, or you’re coughing up $29 for a service call (past 90 days, anyway).

Truly, the source of 95% of the iPhone 4 fail is in the hands of the user. Don’t buy a phone if you are not going to spend at least SOME time learning how it works, or you will be setting yourself up for 24 months of disappointment.

iPhone 4 fail sucks bollocks.
