Android Reaches 100 Million Activations
Android reaches 100 million install mark
God bless ye, Android – you’ve hit 100 million devices. According to Google 400,000 devices are activated with some version of Android every day.
On a personal note, I had an Apple device for a long time before I got rid of it for an Android device. The Android Market is much more suited for developers than Apple’s market, since Apple takes 30% of all app sales. Android doesn’t work that way.
AT&T to cap DSL subscribers in the near future
DSL caps are coming…
Two weeks ago, the news broke that AT&T (the landline company, not AT&T Wireless… even though they’re two halves of the same company) was going to begin implementing DSL caps in May 2011 – something that was previously uncapped, across the board, with the exception of most wireless providers. What do DSL caps mean for you?
The total amount of data that your modem can transfer in a given month will be limited to 150 GB, and if you’re a U-Verse subscriber, 250 GB. While this seems pretty high compared to current caps for wireless broadband (5 GB for aircards, 2 GB down to 200 MB for smartphones), given the tendency for usage rates to rise as streaming content increases, give it a couple years and people will be banging against these caps pretty regularly. To me, DSL caps seem like nothing more than a money grab, pure and simple, as well as an attempt by the providers to try to shape traffic to what they want you to see, which is against a basic tenet of what the Internet and World Wide Web have been since the beginning – a place where information could flow freely to everyone.
DSL caps serve no purpose but to generate more revenue for a giant corporation.
I am not happy about DSL caps. On its face, DSL caps don’t seem like they will affect too many people right now. Most users (if AT&T’s numbers are to be believed, 98% will fall under this cap) will never notice a difference. However, DSL caps signal a larger trend toward limited consumption of what should be a limitless resource. More and more companies will jump onto this bandwagon, and eventually it will all slide downhill. Everyone will have a DSL cap, except for maybe some small discount carrier trying desperately to compete with the big boys. Ultimately, the DSL caps will become a reality for almost all subscribers.
Bah. DSL caps suck.
iRobots in the home
iRobots
Perhaps the most common robots available commercially today are the iRobots. The early part of the 21st century has been a bellwether for the future of robotics. As a child, I wanted something that was a cross between the Jetson’s Rosie and R2D2. While things have not progressed quite that far, iRobot has released a line of home cleaning ‘bots that have been quite successful. The Roomba is perhaps the most popular of the iRobots; it is an autonomous iRobot device that vacuums hard floors and some carpets. The Scooba is a somewhat less popular part of the iRobots line; it incorporates a mopping feature for hard floors.
The notable feature of the iRobots is that they require almost no human intervention, they learn where their dock is and can navigate around obstacles to get to it and recharge after cleaning the floors. The various iRobots can be preset to operate on a given schedule, say, when everyone is at work, and they are AWESOME for terrifying housepets.
iRobots get lost?
One drawback to the earlier iRobots models was that they were easily trapped in corners. Back in the very early 2000s, when I was working in a Verizon kiosk in a Circuit City, the Circuit’s demo iRobots frequently got caught under the accessory gondola decks and had to be retrieved, or they would try to go out the front doors into the parking lot. Newer iRobots can be programmed to stay away from trouble areas, so this is not as much of a concern.
iRobots in the Military!
iRobot’s also a supplier of military & police robots, from Packbot – the most common bomb-disposal robot today – to the Warrior and the SUGV in combination with Boeing. iRobots also funds a ton of R&D into robotics, as well as SPARK, the Starter Program for the Advancement of Robotics Knowledge, a program that brings robotics into classrooms.
Residents Protest T-Mobile Antennas
T-Mobile Antennas Cause Uproar-
Windsor Hills/View Park Residents Support and Thank CVS Corporation and CVS Regional Manager, Earle Robinson. Shortly after this picket, Mr. Robinson went to bat for the residents, testifying against T-Mobile Antennas and the property owner, Alexander Haagen. After more than 1 1/2 years and 7 hearings, Windsor Hills/View Park Residents Prevailed. see:
http://cbs2.com/local/Windsor.Hills.Residents.2.1056662.html
Also see: http://www.cloutnow.org/ and sign or endorse the petition to bring back local control to regulate wireless facilities. CLOUT (Coalition for Local Oversight of Utility Technologies – http://www.cloutnow.org/) is a fast growing national coalition formed as a result of this tremendous backlash against the unchecked proliferation of wireless facilities now targeting residential areas and schools, as wireless companies seek to market new wireless services. (fyi: T-Mobile Antennas is currently the most aggressive because, unlike the largest wireless carriers -AT&T and Verizon-, they have no wired infrastructure/landlines to compete for market share of customers who buy bundled services. T-Mobile Antennas has also been heavily marketing wireless only households with their HotSpot At Home.)
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors also took action June 2nd, calling for Repeal of Federal Cell Tower Health Preemption. You can read their resolution at the www.cloutnow.org site in addition to the LA City School boards resolution regarding T-Mobile Antennas near schools that passed May 26th. Be sure to see letters of endorsements.
Residents across the country have been outraged over the disregard outside telecom companies have for local building and zoning codes, the deceptive and aggressive tactics used by wireless companies to force their way into residential areas, and the fact that many placements of T-mobile antennas and related wireless facilities turn out to be unnecessary to serve existing demand or provide public safety benefits. Elected officials should also be informed that 911 calls from cell phones are designed to be picked up by any available carrier as long as the cell phone making the call has a charged battery and even if the contract has expired for that phone. Arguing that more cell towers are needed to ensure 911 service is a red herring used by cell carriers throughout the country to justify their own business plans and marketing goals, while encouraging citizens to give up landlines and the loss of payphones which provide the most reliable public safety benefits.

Working in Rural America
We live the country, and we love it out here. It is quiet, my closest neighbor is miles away and we like it like that. There are many advantages to living in rural America, but the internet is not one of them. I have been thinking of opening a home based business, but my internet connection was holding me back. We can’t get cable or DSL, we have a dish for our TV, but we have been struggling with dial up internet service. We have to sit and wait for what seems like forever for pages to load. I struggle to finish researching projects for my new business. My kids have trouble with school projects. A few months back one of our friends told us that satellite internet service was our answer. I did some surfing and I found wildblue internet at mybluedish.com. This was the answer to all my problems. High speed internet became a reality and I was able to open my business, my kids are completing their projects on time. The speeds are great, their customer service is wonderful and I didn’t have to get a loan from the bank. I feel like I am part of the world without having to live in the city. Life always seemed easier out here in the country, now living and working is easier thanks to mybluedish.com.
