Can Skype phones work in Singapore’s wifi hotspots?

Author: admin  //  Category: WIFI Hotspots

I read somewhere that Skype phones doesn’t have a browser so they can’t work in areas which require web-based authentication. Do WIFI Hotspots in Singapore require authentication?

IT depends on the hot spot. Most hotels and coffee shops offer wi fi but it’s the coffee shops that will mostly have it for free. If it’s free there will most likely not be a login required.

I did a little reading on the wi fi phones listed on skype and I think you would be fine even if a logon is required. It might be best to contact skype with that question directly before you buy. My educated guess is: you will be fine either way.

How do I keep my laptop secure when using wifi hotspots?

Author: admin  //  Category: WIFI Hotspots

I’m going to purchase a laptop soon and I will be using it a lot at different wifi locations. I was wondering what are some of the best ways to keep my information secure.

I would advise you to ensure you have a proper security suite installed that includes antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc and is from a RELIABLE vendor (like McAfee or Norton) and ensure it is properly configured and kept completely up to date.

I would also avise you to make sure Windows Updates are automatically downloading and installing.

If you are going to be using a lot of wifi spots and have a laptop… then you may want to consider getting an encryption program for your computer.
I would recommend PGP ( http://www.pgp.com )
You can use PGP to encrypt your files, your emails, an entire partition or the entire hard disk which is great for people worried their laptops may be stolen.

I would make sure that you have a good Windows Login password and set the screensaver up to kick in after 5-10 minutes and to require the password. I would also suggest a BIOS password as it is a laptop. This way if it is stolen they cannot boot into the OS without the BIOS password… and with the encrypted hard drive they could do nothing with it.

Aside from that you might want to make sure that remote access is disabled… Right click My Computer > Properties > Remote tab > …
that’s about it really … you could get into turning off services you don’t need depending on how savvy you are but you should be ok with a patched windows os.

Good Luck

I want to be able find wireless services in my area for home use, how do I go about that?

You also stated that wireless is not secure. Does this mean that conducting banking and purchases is not wise using a wireless connection?

Just bring up network connections and check for any that do not say they are protected. Be aware, you will probably be breaking the law. Also, if you can get in to a non-secure network, of course others could get there as well.

If you are sure that the banking website and other sites you might want to purchase from use SSL (in internet explorer you get a little padlock when you are on the page; also look for https instead of http in the address) you’ll be about as safe as any of the rest of us.

I am not recommending you do this, in fact I frown upon it because someone else is paying for a service that you want to piggy back into for free. Try your library to see if they have an open wireless net you can connect to. Check with a local college to see if they have wireless you can access or if they know of a place in your town that purposedly leaves their network open so people can use it.
